PASCAL-MICHEL DUBOIS

  • I am a French visual artist who has been living and working in the UK for over thirty years. I studied Visual Art at the School of Fine Art of Lyon (France) and at Goldsmith’s College (London). I obtained my BA Degree with Honours in 1990 in Lyon. I am using a large variety of media in my work... More recently, maps, texts, diagrams and charts, photos, manufactured objects of all kind - have been appropriated & reassembled with the aim of generating incisive and intriguing moments.

    • LRRTM1
    • Modified found photograph An old school photograph of the artist as a 5 years old boy has been scanned and inverted horizontally. The new version is showed alongside the original scanned one. The title of this piece refers to a protein that, in humans, is encoded by the LRRTM1 gene, the first gene linked to left-handedness (Leucine-rich repeat transmembrane neuronal protein). Other researches have found how organisms are affected by changes in their genes’ expression rather than in the genes themselves by something called “epigenetic”. These changes are often brought about by environmental influences. These gene-expression differences could affect the right and left parts of the spinal cord differently, resulting in left-handedness and right-handedness. Not a long time ago, left-handedness was considered as something “bad” and unacceptable. It had to be “corrected” by any means possible, even by physical restrain.
